The Newton Police Department investigates all complaints and encourages compliments regarding the service or conduct of Department employees.

Compliments

The Department recognizes outstanding law enforcement performance through the formal use of commendations. Expressions of appreciation for services or actions by Department employees are greatly appreciated. Letters recognizing employees for their actions are encouraged and may be submitted by clicking on the “Compliments” tab on this webpage or submit a written letter directly to the Newton Police Department.

Complaints

A proper relationship fostered by confidence and trust between the Newton Police Department and the citizens of Newton, or visitors to our community, is essential to effective law enforcement. The function of the Newton Police Department Administrative Division is to foster this relationship and provide citizens with a fair and effective means for lodging legitimate complaints against Department employees.  It is the policy of the Normal Police Department to accept, investigate, and review all complaints of either alleged misconduct or improper handling of an incident on the part of police personnel, sworn or non-sworn.

If you wish to file a complaint concerning the actions of Newton Police Department personnel, please follow the procedures listed below:

1) Request to speak with the on duty Shift Supervisor by calling 641-791-0850.

2) If your complaint is not resolved after speaking with the on duty Shift Supervisor, the Shift Supervisor may ask you to assist him/her in completing a “Citizen Complaint” form by clicking the "Complaint" tab on this webpage.  The form has a place to list the facts of the incident and the manner in which they occurred.

3) If you do not wish to speak with a Shift Supervisor at that time you may complete the online complaint form by clicking the “Complaint” tab on this webpage.  This form is also available at the front desk at the Newton Police Department.

4) After filing a formal complaint with the department you will be contacted by the Newton Police Department Administration regarding the status of the investigation.

Notice Regarding False Complaints

By filing a complaint with the Newton Police Department you certify the information provided is true and correct. Furthermore, you understand that a written complaint is an official statement and record. Any false statement(s) made in a complaint provided to the Newton Police Department may result in further action. It’s a violation of Iowa Code 718.6 to knowingly provide false information to a public safety entity. In the event the complaint is proven to be false, the information will be provided to the Newton City Attorney for possible legal action.
